I originally registered aaronjw.com in 2006. It wasn’t the first domain I’d ever bought. I believe I’d already gotten mindhole, and Warfactions. RevGal never left its sub-domain, even though I think as Warfactions currently stands, RevGal might have been more active at its peak. I’m pretty sure no one has any idea what I’m rambling about right now, but that’s okay, this whole blog is more for me than it is for you.

Regardless, to get my train of thought back on track, I’ve owned this domain for a long time, and I haven’t done anything with it in ages. My original plan for it was to host a resume, and a blog there. But it always feels weird to me, making something like a resume public. I mean, my resume’s been online and public for years, but it doesn’t have a direct link like this would. Anyway, the blog, I originally built from scratch. It wasn’t anything too appeasing to look at, and it didn’t really compare to the available free blogging tools. But I got much desired programming experience while creating it, and that’s what was important to me.

No one had ever encouraged me to learn to program, but I’ve been doing it since 7th grade. From Basic to C to bits of Python, to PHP, ASP, etc. Granted I don’t currently have a working knowledge of most of them past simple CRUD etc, but outside of wanting to create something of my own, there’s really been no other drive. But here I am, getting close to a decade later, and I still feel like I’m just trying to get started.

Warfactions has been in development since 2005. In six years it’s managed thirteen hundred users, and thirteen thousand unique hits. This is with long periods of stagnation, but even so it’s still not extremely impressive to me compared to what I want from it. The problem is I keep getting distracted by life. Starting out I was pretty heavily limited by my own capabilities, which has been the cause of several complete reboots, but the ideals have stayed the same. So it’s been six years though, and there’s maybe three people that currently pay attention to the site. In order for Warfactions to reach the potential I believe it has, it would need a flow of constant users online. Imagine large factions constantly fighting for control of territories on the map. People scheduled to be online at certain times, specifically to stand guard of the territories.. The problem is, for the multiplayer to be interesting, the site requires multiple players. And for a web game, there’s got to be something to bring people in. So I’m currently putting some heavy focus in single player quests, dungeons, and story lines. If only I could somehow get creative. Anyone want to be creative for me?

Starting over. There’s a reason I made that the title.. I’ve moved myself to a new city, got a new job, new faces, new attitudes. It’s difficult. I don’t know anyone, I don’t know the area, the traffic is insane, and the place is expensive. But at the same time, not a lot has changed. Still struggling to better myself as a developer, still holding the same support rep position, still working to get Warfactions to a level where people think it’s interesting.. I’m just hoping that this can be a point to rise from. I have to believe that I can do what I have to do to get where I want to be. I just have to get over these feelings of inferiority, futility or defeatism.

Chin up.
